TYLER -- The UT Tyler baseball team defeated the Ozarks, 2-1 and 4-2 in the double header sweep on Saturday afternoon at Irwin Field. The Patriots improve to 21-7 on the season and 8-4 in American Southwest Conference action.

After scoring 12 runs in the first game of the series on Friday night, the Patriots only managed to score six total in both games of the Saturday double header, but it proved to be just enough for the sweeping victory.

In game one, the Patriots scored early, scoring one run in the second inning when Billy Lirely reached on a hit by pitch and stole second base, and then scored when Jared Gobert singled up the middle.

The one run would prove to be enough throughout most of the seven inning game, but the Eagles were determined to not go away with nothing, as they scored in the top of the sixth inning when Eagle second baseman tied the game with a solo home run.

UT Tyler, however, responded quickly, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Josh Bates scored when Will Allen singled to right field.

The Patriots used two pitchers to shut down the Eagles, as Michael Blevins got the start, going six and one-third innings, allowing only three hits and the one Eagle run. Blevins also truck out two.

Derek Miller recorded the save in game one, recording the final two outs of the ballgame, and striking out one.

In game two, much was the same, as both teams battled with defense and strong pitching. The Patriots, however, came away with the victory in the end, 4-2.

Just like the first game, the Patriots scored a run in the second inning. Allen started the inning with a walk and advanced to third base when Issac Tijerina singled through the right side. After a Lirely walk, TJ Martin stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Allen from third base to give UT Tyler the early 1-0 lead.

UT Tyler scored another run in the fourth inning as Allen walked again and stole second base. Lirely singled to center field and scored the running Allen from second base.

Ozarks got on the board in the fifth inning when Tony Morales scored on a double play. After registering four hits in the inning, the Eagles only came away with the one run.

The Patriots answered the Ozarks run in their portion of the fifth inning when Jake Ashley singled to center field and then scored when Garrett Machacek singled for the RBI.

The Eagles recorded their second run, and only their third of the double header in the eighth inning, thanks to a Patriot error.

UT Tyler added an insurance run in the eighth inning as Allen scored when Tijerina singled to left field. Tijerina went 2-for-4 in game two with one RBI.

Matt Sheppard took the mound in game two and threw six innings, allowing nine hits, but only one run, while striking out three.

Jacob Yanker pitched the seveth and eighth innings, allowing one run on two hits. Miller recorded his second save of the day in game two, as he completed the ninth inning with a perfect frame.

The Patriots will take a break from ASC play, as they play host to Austin College on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Irwin Field.
