CLINTON, MISS. -- The UT Tyler baseball team started their American Southwest Conference schedule as they split the Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Mississippi College. The Patriots dropped game one, 4-2, but bounced back and won game two, 8-6, and improved to 13-4 overall on the season and 1-1 in conference action.

Game 1: UT Tyler 2, Mississippi College 4

In a game that was originally planned for Friday night, the Choctaws defeated the Patriots, 4-2, behind solid pitching and just enough offense.

Mississippi scored first, as they got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, and led after one inning, 1-0.

The Patriots answered in the top of the second, as they scored their only two runs of the game. Jared Gobert led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on a Garrett Machacek bunt. Gobert scored when Billy Lirely stepped to the plate and belted a double to center field to tie the score.

After Issac Tijerina flied out, Lirely moved over to third on a wild pitch and scored when TJ Martin singled to second base.

Mississippi College responded and overtook the Patriots, scoring one in the sixth inning, and two in the seventh inning to register the victory, 4-2.

Parker Sheets got his first loss of the season, throwing five innings and allowed four runs on 11 hits while striking out one. Konrad Koenig registered one inning, allowing no runs on one hit.

Game 2: UT Tyler 8, Mississippi College 6

The Patriots bounced back from the game one loss and claimed the second game of the doubleheader, winning by a score of 8-6 over the Choctaws.

Two RBI's from William Allen led the way as the Patriots scored eight runs on 10 hits. UT Tyler pitchers also allowed 10 hits, but only let six Choctaw runners cross home plate.

UT Tyler scored three in the second inning as Machacek scored on a Tijerinas single, Lirely scored on a Martin RBI-single, and an Aaron McCain single to right field scored Martin.

After the three runs in the second, the Patriots then scored four runs in the fourth to extend their lead.

Martin started the inning, reaching on a fielding error by the Choctaw short stop, and advanced to second a bunt single by David Ring. After McCain walked, Allen singled to left and scored Martin and Ring. McCain scored a few plays later as Gobert singled to left field. Allen then scored on the back end of a double steal, as he stole home and Machacek stole second base.

The Patriots scored one more in the eighth inning, and had to stave off a Choctaw rally, as Mississippi College brought the score within 8-6, scoring two in their half of the eighth inning.

The UT Tyler pitching found their stride in the ninth, as the Patriots took the victory, 8-6.

Jack Barkley threw five and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, and striking out two. Michael Blevins relieved Barkley, allowing two runs on three hits in three and one-third inning of work.

The Patriots will continue their series with Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match at 1 pm in Clinton.
