Patriots Wrap Up Opening Weekend With Win

TYLER -- UT Tyler closed out the 2012 Clements Fluids Classic with a 5-2 win over American Southwest Conference member Texas Lutheran on a frigid afternoon at Irwin Field.  The win brings the Patriots record to 2-1 for the season.

With the scored tied 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning, senior TJ Martin drove in the go-ahead run with a deep sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 3-2, which would turn out to be the game-winner.

The Patriots scored first in the bottom of the first inning on a single by catcher Hayden Chick, to make the score 1-0 early.  The RBI would be Chick's fourth of the season.

Texas Lutheran (2-1) answered quickly in the top of the second inning, taking the 2-1 lead, which would be it's last runs of the game.

The Patriots tied the score at 2-2 in the third inning with an Aaron McCain single to right field that scored David Ring.  McCain finished the day with three hits, two RBI and a run scored.  

UT Tyler added two more insurance runs in the the seventh and eighth innings respectively.  Martin notched his second RBI of the day with his second sacrifice fly in the seventh, while McCain picked up his second with a single hit back to the pitcher.

The Bulldogs had no answer for the Patriots pitching staff on the day.  Starter Jack Barkley went 6 innings, striking out three and giving up only one earned run to pick up the win.  

Chick continued his hot-start to the season, going 3 for 4 with one RBI while Jared Gobert went 2 for 3 with a run scored.  

UT Tyler gets a few days off before returning to the field again against Arlington Baptist on Friday, February 17 at Irwin Field in Tyler.
