Sherman Leads Baseball All-ASC Selections

RICHARDSON, Texas -- Chad Sherman was named the 2011 American Southwest Conference East Division Pitcher of the Year and was one of eight Patriots selected to the All-ASC baseball teams, the conference office announced Monday after a vote of the league's coaches.

First-year head coach Paul Wyczawski and his staff of Paige Hodges, Josh Dickerson and Derek Williford were also honored as Co-Coaching Staff of the Year for the East Division after leading the Patriots to their fifth ASC East Championship.

Sherman, a senior from Bullard, Texas, held down a league-leading 1.49 ERA in eight wins on the season. He topped the ASC in strikeouts, fanning 95 batters so far on the year.

Sherman was joined on the first team by seniors Nick Clifton (Gladewater, Texas/Gladewater HS) and Justin Juneau (Bossier City, La./Jefferson State CC), and junior Aaron McCain (Royse City, Texas/Dallas Christian HS).

Clifton won the ASC batting title, hitting a league-best .426 on the season. He also led the conference on on-base percentage at .515 while bringing in 49 runs.

Juneau, hitting .401, was among the top five batters in the conference all season. He had 42 RBIs and scored 47 runs of his own.

McCain scored 44 runs on the season while batting .310.  He posted eight doubles and had an on-base percentage of .429.

Earning second team honors for the Patriots were sophomore T.J. Martin (Plano, Texas/Bishop Lynch HS), junior Hayden Chick (Waco, Texas/Midway HS), junior Parker Sheets (Irving, Texas/MacArthur HS), and senior Matt Schimpf (Arlington, Texas/East Texas Baptist).

Martin was third for the Patriots in batting average with a .345 mark on the year and had 36 RBIs, while Chick hit .311 and batted in 34 runs.

Sheets made 12 appearances in relief for the Patriots and picked up two saves.  Schimpf started 11 games and posted a 6-1 record with a 2.47 ERA, striking out 45 batters.

The Patriots (33-6) are waiting for word on a possible at-large selection to the NCAA Baseball Championships.
