McM Takes Opener in 13, Sat. Times Changed

TYLER -- It took 13 innings, but McMurry pulled out a 6-4 win over UT Tyler in the opener of the 2011 American Southwest Conference Baseball Championship First Round series at Irwin Field. Game two of the series has been moved up to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The game time was chagned due to possible inclement weather later in the afternoon in East Texas.

UT Tyler (33-5), which struggled to score runs for the majority of the game and headed into the bottom of the ninth down, 4-1, tied the game on three walks to force extra innings. After Aaron McCain singled to lead off the inning, McMurry reliever Deen Coleman promptly walked in three runs to tie the score at 4-4. The Patriots left the bases loaded to end the inning, unable to bring home the winning run.

The Patriots stranded 13 runners on the night.

McMurry (16-25) scored two runs in the top of the 13th inning on a two-run double by catcher Bradd Baker and Coleman picked up the win after pitching a one-two-three final inning.

McMurry did most of their damage in the sixth inning off of Patriot starter Chad Sherman. After the Warhawks got the first two batters on, Walt Williams knocked brought them around with a two-run single to right field.  After two more runners reached base, an error by Patriot second baseman Ben Westlake allowed McMurry to go up, 4-0.

The Patriots were able to cut into in the bottom of the sixth when Hayden Chick led-off with a triple to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly by T.J. Martin.

McMurry starter Spencer Smith pitched 6 2/3 innings, striking out five and giving up only one run.

Jack Barkley took the loss for the Patriots.

UT Tyler managed 10 hits in the game, paced by leadoff man Aaron McCain who went 3-for-5.
