TYLER – UT Tyler junior Bowie Farris ripped a two-run double to center field to tie it and scored the go-ahead run on a Ben Romines groundout in the eighth to help lead the No. 12-ranked Patriots to a 9-8 non-conference win over Millsaps on Tuesday at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (9-5) used the three-run eighth-inning to sweep the season series against the Majors (11-5) going into an American Southwest Conference series against Hardin-Simmons on Friday and Saturday in Abilene.

Farris led the Patriots by going 2-for-2 with four RBI from the eighth spot in the lineup, including the eighth inning two-run double that came after a two-run double in the third inning. Graham Welch recorded the save on the mound after getting the final out by way of strikeout to secure his third save of the year and also went 2-for-3 with two RBI as the starting center fielder. Welch had an RBI single in center fielder in the first inning where the Patriots scored two runs, while Blake Wilson drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt in the second to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead going to the third where Farris drove in his first pair of runs.

UT Tyler senior Sam Sitton (3-0) secured the win after throwing 3 2/3 innings where he scattered three hits and allowed only two runs. Ryan Cheatham threw a scoreless eighth inning in relief before Welch came in to close it out. Adam Nelson went three innings in his first start of the season where he struck out two in the no-decision.

The Patriots finished the game with nine hits, including hits from Jared Pauley, Wilson, Blake Maddox, Alex Bishop, Josh Burns and two hits from Welch and Farris. Bishop hit a first-inning RBI single for the first run of the game.

UT Tyler and Hardin-Simmons will open their ASC series at 7 p.m. on Friday before a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The Patriots improved to 5-5 at their home field with the win on Tuesday, while the Cowboys are 5-8 after earning a 10-8 win over Schreiner in their midweek game at home.
