TYLER – The UT Tyler baseball team will face an elimination game at 11 a.m. on Friday after Rhodes College scored seven unanswered runs in the final three innings to a take a 7-2 win over the Patriots on Thursday in the opener of the NCAA Division III West Regional at Irwin Field.

UT Tyler (39-8) led 1-0 after Tim Hunter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Trenton Buchhorn and then a 2-0 advantage in the sixth with Hunter hitting a one-out RBI single to center field to score Ben Romines who reached on an error to start the inning. UT Tyler will play Concordia in the elimination game after the Tornados fell 6-3 against Cal Lutheran in its first game. 

Rhodes College (26-19) was limited to three hits over the first six innings by UT Tyler starter Cody Brown, but would put together a five-run inning on three hits in the seventh. The Lynx got on the board for the first time with a Levi Greenberg sacrifice fly to center before striking for three on a Bill Munson double down the left-field line. RC would add two more in the ninth on a Paul Giamcomazzi RBI single through the middle of the infield with two outs.

Hunter, Gunnar Quick and Ben Romines led the Patriots with two hits each, while Alex Bishop added the seventh hit. Hunter finished the game 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI. He now leads the nation with 62 walks and has 19 RBI for the Patriots.

Brown (10-3) received the loss after allowing four earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. Brown had eight strikeouts and scattered five hits before the Lynx were able to get to him and reliever Miles Thomas to take the 5-2 lead in the seventh. Alex Garrett (3-1) earned the win in relief for Rhodes College after throwing 3 2/3 innings where he limited the Patriots to two hits. He relieved starter Blake Glauben who matched Brown with eight strikeouts and held UT Tyler to five hits in 5 1/3.

Ryan Olive led the Lynx with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, while Munson was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Giacomazzi went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Rhodes College will play at 3 p.m. on Friday against the loser of Thursday night’s matchup between Linfield and Centenary.
