TYLER – The No. 4-ranked UT Tyler baseball team took a 5-3 win over Hardin-Simmons on Friday to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series with Dalton Smith driving in the eventual game-winning run with a single in the seventh and Reese Read recording the save with a strikeout to end it at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (23-4, 12-1 ASC) have now won five straight games going into a 1 p.m. on doubleheader on Saturday that will begin with the presentation of the first Issac Tijerina Award.

Hunter Palmer (1-1) earned the first win of his season after throwing 1 1/3 innings of relief with Smith breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a single through the right side of the infield and then Josh Burns hitting a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.

Ben Romines led the Patriots by going 2-for-3, including a run-scoring single to left field in the third inning. The Patriots finished the game with eight hits, including doubles from Graham Welch and Blake Wilson and singles from Tim Hunter, Trenton Buchhorn, Daniel Williams and Smith.

Williams would drive in the first run of the game with a first-inning single through the middle of the infield to score Hunter who had reached with a leadoff single. Williams now leads the Patriots and conference with 34 RBI, while Buchhorn is hitting .424 on the season after hitting a first-inning single.

Read earned his seventh save of the season after getting two fly outs to the outfield and then a strikeout. Ryan Cheatham would strike out two and scatter three hits, but left the game after five innings with the Patriots leading 3-2. The Cowboys would tie it in the seventh, before Palmer recorded four outs and saw the offense respond and Read shut it down.

UT Tyler is now 13-2 at home this season going into Saturday’s doubleheader, while Hardin-Simmons falls to 10-15 overall and is 5-8 in ASC play.
