TYLER – The nation is taking notice of the UT Tyler baseball team which has started the season with a 15-3 record and has outscored its opponents by a 118-61 margin.

RANKINGS: Collegiate Baseball  D3Baseball.com

The Patriots have soared to No. 4 in the Collegiate Baseball/ABCA Poll in their first regular season ranking release and are at No. 5 in the D3baseball.com Top 25. UT Tyler was No. 18 in the Collegiate Baseball Preseason Rankings and No. 20 by D3Baseball but have rapidly climbed up the national ladder by putting together a six-game and eight-game winning streaks already this season.

UT Tyler is 5-1 in American Southwest Conference play after sweeping Belhaven and taking two of three at Howard Payne three weeks ago. The Patriots dropped a non-conference game to Southwestern by a 5-1 score on Tuesday at Irwin Field to snap an eight-game winning streak and will host Sul Ross this weekend in a three-game series. The Patriots and Pirates split their regular-season series with UT Tyler taking a 7-3 win in Georgetown back on Feb. 21. The Lobos will travel to Tyler with a 9-12 overall record and are 2-4 in ASC play after dropping two of three to UT Dallas last weekend in Alpine.

The UT Tyler starting pitchers have been strong all season with Ryan Cheatham (5-0), Cason Adams (3-0) and Cody Brown (2-2) leading the way. Brown is a two-time ASC Pitcher of the Week, while Adams earned one earlier this season and Cheatham was named this week’s ASC Pitcher of the Week after facing the minimum in a complete-game (7 innings) last week against Northland with the assist of two double plays to eliminate two hits. Brown, a senior transfer from Sam Houston and Tyler Junior College, leads the team with 33 strikeouts though 24 innings of work, while Adams is 19-9 in his four years at UT Tyler and has 173 career strikeouts. A junior from Whitehouse, Cheatham transferred from TJC this season and is the first ASC pitcher to reach five wins.

Daniel Williams extended a six-game hitting streak on Tuesday and leads the Patriots with a .451 batting average which includes two doubles, three home runs, 27 singles and has produced a team-leading 25 RBI. A senior from Katy, Williams has eight multi-RBI performances through 18 games and is seventh in the nation with his 25 RBI and 10th in the country with his 32 total hits. UT Tyler leadoff hitter Tim Hunter leads the nation with 21 walks, including taking a bases-loaded walk last Wednesday for a walk-off win over Northland College and then taking four straight walks in the second game of the series to match a single-game program record. Hunter leads the team with seven stolen bases and 17 runs scored. Three players have 19 walks and two have 18 in the national walk category.

Trenton Buchhorn is hitting .406 with 28 total hits and 16 RBI for the Patriots, while Gunnar Quick and Jared Pauley have 20 hits each. Quick is hitting .299 with a team-leading six doubles and is third on the team with eight walks. Pauley is at .290 on the season, while catcher Brady McCoy is hitting .294 with 12 RBI. He added his 12th on Tuesday night with an RBI double down the left-field line to score a runner from first for the only UT Tyler run of the night. Alex Bishop continued to be a force in the middle of the lineup and is hitting .300 with 18 hits and six RBI. He is second on the team with 16 walks and has two home runs and two doubles. Ben Romines is at .349 on the year with three doubles, a triple and 11 singles for the Patriots who are hitting .320 as a team which ranks second in the ASC behind only UT Dallas which is hitting .363 this season.

UT Tyler will host the Lobos starting at 6 p.m. on Friday before playing a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. The series is part of an 11-game home stand that will end next Tuesday with a non-conference game against Centenary before the Patriots go on the road to play at Ozarks next weekend in Clarksville, Arkansas.
