TYLER – Cody Brown struck out 11 earned a 4-0 complete-game win in the opener and Daniel Williams hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs in a 15-6 series finale victory as the Patriots swept Belhaven in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader and a three-game American Southwest Conference this weekend at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (12-2, 5-1 ASC) improved to 6-0 at home with the ASC sweep of the Blazers (7-6, 2-4 ASC) after hitting .355 as a team during the series with 33 hits and a 27-9 combined scoring advantage. UT Tyler earned the sweep with its three starting pitchers Ryan Cheatham, Brown and Cason Adams combining for 27 strikeouts and each earning wins, while Gunnar Quick and Trenton Buchhorn led the team with five hits during the sweep to start an 11-game home stand.

“This weekend was the first time this year that we had our pitching, defense and offense clicking on all cylinders,” UT Tyler head coach Brent Porche said. “We did a phenomenal job in many different circumstances and situations throughout the three ballgames to produce runs offensively. We got three great starts from Cason, Cheatham and Cody and the bullpen once again did a great job of coming in and pounding the strike zone. We can’t get complacent and we have a long way to go, but I’m very proud of our guys for the way we competed all weekend.”

Brown (2-2) earned the first complete-game victory of his UT Tyler career after scattering six hits over seven innings with only one walk. Brown needed only 91 pitches to get through the Blazers on the afternoon while where he was staked to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Kyle Broussard took a bases-loaded walk for the first run and then Jared Pauley drove in the second with a fielder’s choice that brought home Trenton Buchhorn who had a single to reach base. The Patriots finished the game with eight singles with eight different players having those hits. Gunnar Quick went 1-for-2 in the game but drove in his run with a sacrifice bunt in the fourth after Ben Romines had hit an RBI single in the third to score Quick who had led the inning off with a single.

Williams led the Patriots in the second game with four RBI, including crushing a three-run home run in the second inning after being hit by a pitch in the first inning with the bases loaded to bring a run home. A senior from Katy, Williams is off to an absurd start to the year with 21 RBI through 14 games and now has three home runs this season. He also had three homers last season in his first year at UT Tyler and now leads the team in that category along with RBI. Buchhorn had a 3-for-6 performance in the nine-run win and finished the series at 5-for-12 with four RBI. A senior from Arlington, Buchhorn singled in the first inning and then again in the second to bring home a run for the Patriots who led 8-0 through two innings and then scored six in the eighth on four hits. Alex Bishop finished the game 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Romines, Pauley and Brady McCoy each had two hits. McCoy would drive in two runs in the game, while Tim Hunter, Quick and Bishop each scored twice to lead the team.

Adams (2-0) earned the win in the finale after striking out eight in seven innings of work. The senior right hander has now won 18 games in his career and has 166 strikeouts which is the third most in program history after he passed Michael Blevins (157 strikeouts) in his last two starts. Blake Booher (2006-09) is next on the list at 219 with Brett Holland (2006-09) way up there at 284 career strikeouts.

UT Tyler will now host Northland College in a pair of weekday games starting on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday at Irwin Field.
