TYLER – The UT Tyler baseball team opened American Southwest Conference play with a 12-11 victory over Howard Payne on Friday in Brownwood.

The Patriots improved to 7-1 overall and began conference play 1-0 with their sixth straight victory. Howard Payne fell to 3-5 and 0-1.

UT Tyler opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning. Daniel Williams, Trenton Buchhorn and Brady McCoy all had RBI singles to give the Patriots an early lead.

Howard Payne scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead, but the Patriots answered with seven in the top of the fourth.

McCoy started the big inning with an RBI double. Benjamin Romines followed with an RBI triple. Henry Sanchez and Tim Hunter then both had bunt RBI singles to give the Patriots back the lead at 7-5. Williams drove in another run with a sacrifice fly and Buchhorn singled home another before Gunnar Quick scored on a dropped fly ball by the Yellow Jackets. By the time the inning ended, the Patriots had a 10-5 lead.

Howard Payne clawed back, scoring one in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth to cut the UT Tyler lead to 10-8.

The Patriots extended their lead to 11-8 in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Sanchez and 12-8 in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Buchhorn.

The Yellow Jackets scored three in the bottom of the eighth to cut the UT Tyler lead to 12-11 but the Patriots managed to hold on for the one-run victory.

Offensively, Buchhorn had three hits and three RBIs for the Patriots. Williams, McCoy and Sanchez each had two hits and two RBIs.

Cason Adams started for UT Tyler on the mound and got a no-decision. The win went to Evan Kissinger, who got the Patriots out of the fifth inning and pitched the sixth for his second victory of the season. Reese Read pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season.

UT Tyler will be back in action Tuesday when it plays at LSU-Alexandria. It will be Patriots’ head coach Brent Porche’s first visit to the school he spent four years at before taking over at UT Tyler.

The Patriots will return to ASC play next weekend when they host Belhaven.
