TYLER – The No. 18-ranked UT Tyler baseball team has been picked to win the sixth American Southwest Conference title in program history after receiving 15 first-place votes in the ASC Preseason Poll with rankings coming from the league's head coaches, sports information directors and media members. The preseason release also has Trenton Buchhorn and Cason Adams on the ASC Players to Watch list.

Concordia finished second in the ASC preseason poll with seven first-place votes, while East Texas Baptist and Hardin-Simmons tied for third and UT Dallas is fifth. The Patriots have won back-to-back ASC titles and also won the conference championship in 2013, 2010 and 2009.

“Preseason honors are a great mark of the success the program has put together from its inception,” UT Tyler head coach Brent Porche said. “The thing about this group of guys that can make that a reality is their commitment to doing the fundamental things the right way and playing the game he right way. We've got a veteran group that knows what it takes to win. I'm confident in their ability to bring their best self everyday and practice and for games. The rest will take care of itself.”

The Patriots are coming off winning the 2015 ASC Championship tournament and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament for the sixth time. UT Tyler, which finished last season with a 32-19 record, will begin its 14th season in program history with three games in Jackson, Mississippi starting against No. 11 Trinity on Friday, Feb. 10 before playing Berry College on Feb. 11 and Maryville on Feb. 12. The team will host the Clements Fluids Classic from Feb. 17-19 at Irwin Field with games against Trinity, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Centenary on its home-opening weekend schedule.

UT Tyler is led by Porche in 2017 after he took over the program in August. A Baton Rouge native, Porche is the fourth coach in program history and comes from LSU Alexandria where he led the team to a 147-83 record over four seasons. Porche has 26 returners on the UT Tyler roster, including Buchhorn and Alex Bishop who earned ABCA/Rawlings All-Region honors and Brady McCoy, Adams, Graham Welch, Blake Wilson and Reese Read who are returning all-conference selections along with Buchhorn and Bishop. The returners are joined by 10 transfers and 12 players straight out of high school who will begin practice on Monday in preparation for the season.

Buchhorn is on the ASC Watch List after driving in 60 runs for the Patriots last season and hitting .318 with 17 doubles, seven triples and six home runs. A junior from Arlington, Buchhorn enters his second season with the Patriots having earned all-region and all-conference honors last year. Adams, a senior right-hander, comes into his final year at UT Tyler with a 16-9 career record after going 8-2 last season. The Rockwall native struck out 69 and had a 3.53 ERA as a junior and is fourth all-time in program history with 144 career strikeouts.

UT Tyler is 415-154 all-time as a program entering the season where it is ranked No. 18 in the Collegiate Baseball Preseason Poll.
