TYLER – The No. 20/22-ranked UT Tyler baseball team hosts LSU-Alexandria in a three-game set this weekend starting with a 6 p.m. game on Friday to be followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Irwin Field.
The Patriots (4-2) are coming off a weekend where they earned a 9-0 win over Texas Lutheran between losses to Centenary and No. 7 Trinity at the Clements Fluids Classic. UT Tyler enters this weekend against the Generals with a .292 team batting average with 39 singles, 13 doubles, five triples and a home run from freshman Kelly Dorsett. The Patriot pitching staff owns a 3.98 ERA with 57 strikeouts and only 12 walks through the initial 52 innings of work this season. LSU-Alexandria (3-5) is coached by Brent Porche who was coached by and coached with UT Tyler head coach Chris Bertrand at LSU-Shreveport.
UT Tyler has announced a probable starting rotation of Michael Blevins (0-1), Tyler Stallings (2-0) and Cason Adams (1-0) for this weekend’s series. Blevins has recorded eight strikeouts and has a 5.87 ERA in his two starts this season and is coming off a loss to Centenary. Stallings is 2-0 on the season and has not allowed an earned run through 10 1/3 innings where he has also recorded 12 strikeouts and allowed only five hits. Adams, who did not receive a decision against Trinity last Sunday in his second start of the season, has 10 strikeouts and only three walks through 12 innings this season. Adams started the season with a complete-game victory in the season opener where the Patriots took a 2-1 win over the University of Dallas.
Trenton Buchhorn has started the season with a six-game hitting streak for the Patriots and enters the third weekend of play with a .407 batting average and six RBI. A junior from Arlington, Buchhorn transferred in from TJC and has two triples, two doubles and seven singles through six games. Another lefty, Graham Welch leads the team with a .409 average with a triple, double and six singles to start his freshman season and Dorsett leads the team with a .609 on-base percentage with eight walks and five hits. Welch enters this weekend on a five-game hitting streak and joins Buchhorn and Alex Bishop as the only Patriots to reach base in each game this season.
Bishop has added six hits and is on a four-game streak, while Braxton Hollenshead has seven hits this season and is coming off a Clements Fluids Classic weekend where he had four hits and four RBI. Brady McCoy would also produce a solid weekend with four hits and two RBI in the three-game tournament and enters this week with a .278 batting average and having made five starts at catcher for the Patriots. Dorsett and McCoy have reached base in five straight games for the Patriots who have a .432 on-base percentage as a team while their opponents are only getting on base at a .293 percentage.
UT Tyler will travel to Shreveport for a mid-week game on Tuesday against Centenary before returning home next week to host UMHB in a three-game set to open American Southwest Conference play.
